Up for the Crown: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen started out as child actors but they are few of the celebrities to make it big in the fashion world.  They started their design career in early childhood when they created a tween fashion line for Wal-Mart. The famous child actresses have expanded the line down into a lucrative partnership with JCPenney, which carries the "Olsenboye" line.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s fashion company, Dualstar, has been acclaimed for the Fall 2011 sportswear collection of high-end separates and textured pieces. The luxury fashion line, "The Row," has reached over a billion dollars in total sales and the twins have no intention of slowing down.  Although "The Row" started off slow, it is not stigmatized like many other celebrity-clothing lines. The twins have been surrounded by fashion from their early television years, and were constantly in fittings, around tailors, and inspired by extremely fashionable women. They packed their bags moving from L.A. to NYC at age 18, as they have taken a hiatus from acting to focus on their fashion careers. Although they are 24, the Olsen Twins have immense fashion aesthetic and business savvy exemplified by their line’s success.
“The Row” just launched its own website.  (http://shop.therow.com/shop/)  The focus of this collection is mostly black and white pieces with an edge to them.  They also have a men’s collection, which is very casual and also used the new trend of color blocking.
I give these tiny stars 5 crowns for their collection.  Not only are their clothes great for street-wear but also they really have a great website and ads that draw your attention.

Up for the Crown: Emma Watson

The one and only Hermione Granger... Oops! I mean Emma Watson is taking a major leap into the fashion industry by collaborating with Italian designer, Alberta Ferretti. The clothing collection, Pure Threads, is going to be sold through People Tree who is known for their ethical clothing. This will be Emma's third collection for the company- which debuted in February 2011. Emma has stated, "I will put it out there that I will work for anyone for free if they are prepared to make their clothing fair trade organic." She is extremely hands-on in the entire process, even traveling to Bangladesh to oversee production and the fabrication process. [You can see the video I included below!] Emma’s role consists of repping the line, appearing in People Tree ad campaigns, and forming the silhouettes of the garments. Personally, I think the collection is super cute especially with patterns including florals, polka-dots, checks, and gingham. All clothing is eco-friendly and is composed of hand-woven fabrics, 100% organic Fair-trade certified cotton, silk, and of course other organic materials in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. The collection is mainly focused on girls, but there are some clothes for guys as well. The collection has dresses, shirts, bottoms, accessories, and nightwear. Emma describes the line as being “very classic, ‘60s” style. Emma Watson has been a trend setter/fashion icon for quite a while now so I am completely happy with her being part of this collection. I give Pure Threads five out of five crowns because I think it is for a great cause, raising awareness of organic and Fair-trade certified products, and is worth the extra money. Plus the clothes are absolutely ADORABLE!

Up for the Crown: Carey Hart

In the action sports world he is known as one of the founding fathers of free style motocross and to most of America he is known as Pink's husband; but he is so much more than that-he is the owner of Hart and Huntington, a successful tattoo company and apparel line.  The Hart and Huntington apparel line consists of men's tees, hoodies, shorts, and a few flannels, along with some women's tops. All the pieces are inspired by the tattoo artists in the Hart and Huntington tattoo parlors.  The cool thing about this line is that Hart has added in some cool accessories too! He has belts, wallets, socks, and the ever so popular with boys these days, flat billed hats. Now, I have to say I am not the biggest fan of these flat billed hats the boys are loving so much, but the Hart and Huntington ones are pretty decent as far as they go. They just have the H&H logo on them and come in basic colors like black, white, and gray.  The clothes are what  i would expect from the typical motocross guy, but I think the accessories were a nice little add on to it.  I would expect something a little more on the women's clothing side of things though having Pink has a wife and all.  The Hart and Huntington apparel is available at all of the tattoo shops, online, as well as some other retail outlets.  I'm a sucker for a good plaid shirt on a guy, so naturally the plaid button ups are by far my favorite pieces in the collection.

It's a pretty decent line for those "bro" guys out there and there is that cool little extra bit of the accessories, but I definitely expected a little more on the women's side of things having a wife like Pink, so I give Mr. Hart 4 out of 5 crowns this week.

Oh those flat billed hats, why are they so popular?!

Up for the Crown: Katie Holmes

The trendsetter herself is starting a fashion line. The mom of one of the most fashionable kids in Hollywood is trying her hand at designing. Tom Cruises’ wife Katie Holmes and her design partner, Jeanne Yang, presented their fashion line Holmes & Yang at a trunk show at Barneys New York on Friday (February 11) in Dallas, Texas.  The show was so successful that there was virtually no Holmes & Yang pieces left at the end of each show and Barneys had to place a reorder!

Katie started working on the line two years ago with Jeanne Yang, her stylist and friend. The two partners first had the idea for the label while going through Katie’s own closet four years ago as they both agreed that women, like men, needed wardrobe staple-based uniforms for everyday wear.  The collection includes basics like blouses, trousers, jumpsuits, skirts, and cocktail dresses that retail on a high end ($945 for a blouse, for example). It is common for pricy celebrity fashion lines to flop, but maybe she will take after her friend Victoria Beckham who has a very successful high-end clothing line.  Holmes’ high-end line features pieces for women and children (maybe Suri had a hand in the children’s pieces). Mrs. Cruise is her own best advertisement by wearing pieces such as a steely Prussian blue fitted dress to high-profile events.

I give this line a rating of 4 crowns.  Katie Holmes was smart in partnering with a stylist, but the price point is not for everybody.  So far Katie’s fashion line is doing better than her acting career.  Maybe she should consider making this a permanent career change.
